Calendar & Events

• Santa Cruz • Monterey • Carmel

• San Jose • South Bay • Silicon Valley & The World!

Welcome to our Free Online Calendar and Events page! It is free to post your Events, if this is your first time you can click on the instructions below. Let your friends, groups, and business contacts know about our Free Calendar resource. Please Like and Share our Calendar on Facebook, Twitter, etc. Scroll to the bottom of this page for instructions.

Calendar Posting Instructions
Calendar Event Posting is quite easy and it is free to all. You may post as many calendar events as you want, but keep in mind that the Calendar Events section is for Classes, Workshops, Events, Performances, Expos, Retreats, etc., and that they can be free or paid events. If your posting feels more like an advertisement, it may not be accepted. Calendar Event posting can be for anywhere in the world, as long as it seems appropriate for Connection Magazine. We will, however, give priority to calendar events in the Santa Cruz, Monterey / Carmel, San Jose /Silicon Valley /South Bay, and San Francisco areas, if the calendar is too full.

How to Post your Calendar Event

Posting your Calendar Event is easy. Click on the green Post Your Event button in the upper right corner above the calendar. A window will open for you to fill out your event information. There are required details that need to be filled out before the event can be submitted. You must fill out Event Title, Date, Venue Name & Address, Description of Event (Your description can be as long as you want. Feel free to add graphic.), Organizer Name and Email. Phone number for contact. If there is a required Detail that you can’t fill in, just write N/A. Keep in mind that we will need to contact you to determine if your calendar / event listing is real so that we can post it. So, give valid contact information. Make sure to keep the http:// in front of your web addresses.

Adding an Image is highly recommended because it makes your event stand out. Click on Select Image button to select an image from your computer. See the Adding Image paragraph below. Then click on the green Submit Event button to submit your event. Your Calendar Submission will then be moderated and usually posted within 24 hours or less.

Repeating Calendar Events

Calendar Events that repeat are great. Unfortunately, this plugin does not allow the poster to setup the recurrence of their calendar event. We will have to set it up for you. You do not have to list your event more than once. Simply describe when your event will repeat in the Description section.

Things we will need to know to setup the recurrence for your event are:

  • Does your event last more than one day?
  • Are the times different for each day? Many event start at one time on Friday and have different times for Saturday and Sunday.
  • Does the event repeat Daily, Weekly, Monthly, Yearly or is it a Custom arrangement?
  • Does your event repeat on a certain day (like Mondays) or a certain date (like the 15th)?
  • Do the repeated events end after a certain date or a certain number of occurrences or just go on forever? We will put in a maximum of 6 months, and then you will have to resubmit your event.
  • Put the Recurrence Setup information at the bottom of the Description, and we will delete that part before we post your event.

Calendar Event Images

Please add an image to your event posting. An image really dresses up your listing. If you can not figure out how to add your image, you can email it to us and we will add it to your event for you. Ideally, your image should be 1000 to 1200 pixels wide, so that if it is shared on Facebook, it will be shared with a large image, instead of a smaller thumbnail image. For Twitter, remember that an image should be twice as wide as tall to look it best on Twitter.

Calendar / Event Types of Images

Images for the Calendar / Events should be .jpg, .png, or .gif images. PDF and .tif images will not work. You must convert the image to one of the approved formats. If you can not convert your image (Many, many people can’t convert their image, so don’t be shy.), just ask and we will be happy to help you. We would be rather you have a posting with an image, than not.

What Kind of Image to Post

You can post photos, flyers, posters, etc. Save your image as a .jpg file before you post it.

Summary: 7:00 pm – Bill Charlap Trio

Description: Pianist Bill Charlap is a master of the piano trio format. From American Songbook classics to obscure bebop tunes, his sense of phrasing and harmonic intuition keeps the music percolating at all times. The Bill Charlap Trio was formed in 1997 with bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington. Almost immediately they drew raves from jazz fans and music critics, alike. The two Washington’s are not related but perform as if they were born to play together. Charlap signed with the iconic Blue Note Records in 2000 and released a string of heralded recordings, two of which received Grammy award nominations. In 2009 for Blue Note’s 70th anniversary, Charlap was appointed musical director for the Blue Note Seven, an all-star septet made up of the label’s artist roster. Charlap’s professional career has spanned the gamut of gigs, from accompanist to bandleader. He has performed with many prominent jazz artists including Phil Woods, Gerry Mulligan and Wynton Marsalis. With his trio – together now for almost two decades – the interplay between Bill, Peter and Kenny verges on the telepathic. You will not hear a finer straight-ahead, jazz piano trio than this one.

Summary: Vaxxed the Movie They Don’t Want You to See at Nickelodeon Theater in Santa Cruz
Description: Dr. Andrew Wakefield directs this controversial documentary examining the potential causal relationship between the Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) vaccine and autism. In 2013, biologist Dr. Brian Hooker received a call from a Senior Scientist at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) who led the agency’s 2004 study on the MMR vaccine and its link to autism. The scientist, Dr. William Thompson, confessed that the CDC had omitted crucial data in their final report that revealed a causal relationship between the MMR vaccine and autism. Over several months, Dr. Hooker records the phone calls made to him by Dr. Thompson who provides the confidential data destroyed by his colleagues at the CDC. Dr. Hooker enlists the help of Dr. Wakefield, the British gastroenterologist who first reported in 1998 that the MMR vaccine may cause autism. Includes interviews with pharmaceutical insiders, doctors, politicians and parents of children believed to have been injured by vaccines.

Summary: 7:00 pm – Alfredo Rodriguez Trio feat. guest vocalist Ganavya Doraiswamy
Description: Alfredo Rodriguez is yet another incredible pianist to come out of Cuba’s rich musical culture. Rigorously schooled in classical piano at Havana’s conservatories, Alfredo’s deep connection to the folkloric music of Cuba is evident in his incendiary performances. But it was his voracious appetite for American jazz and jazz piano that led Rodriguez to his current ascendancy on the international music circuit with appearances at the Playboy Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival, Jazz in Marciac, Umbria Jazz and Jazz à Vienne. In 2006 he was discovered playing at the Montreux Jazz Festival by Quincy Jones, the iconic producer, who has worked with everyone from Billie Holiday to Michael Jackson. Quincy succinctly sums up Rodriguez’s talent, “Alfredo is very special and I do not say that easily because I have been surrounded by the best musicians in the world my entire life. He is without a doubt one of the best young pianists I’ve ever seen and with the enormous skills that he already possesses, his potential is limitless.” Jones co-produced Rodriguez’s latest album, Tocororo, a sonic tour de force which features the incredible vocals of classical Indian singer Ganavya Doraiswamy who will be performing on this tour.

Murray Low,  Grammy-nominated Latin jazz pianist and former Kuumbwa Artist-in-Residence, will talk about different ways to incorporate rhythmic ideas into your playing and improvisation. Summary: Laughter Yoga
Description: Laughter Yoga is all about playing, having fun, feeling good and relaxing. It’s an innovative wellness tool where anyone can laugh at any time as a form of stress relief. We laugh in a group as a form of exercise, and through eye contact and childlike playfulness the fake laughter becomes real and contagious. It is a scientific fact that the body does not know the difference between fake laughter and the real thing, so when we laugh we receive a happy chemical release (dopamine, serotonin), and create more ease and space in our bodies and minds.

Summary: 7:00 pm – The Guitarsonists: Chris Cain, Mighty Mike Schermer, Daniel Castro
Description: The Guitarsonists are comprised of Chris Cain, Mighty Mike Schermer and Daniel Castro––quite the triumvirate of guitar-slingers. With players this versatile it would be near impossible for any guitar fan to come away disappointed. Cain has been playing since the age of eight and has become an institution on the Bay Area blues scene. His searing blues guitar style is just one of his abilities, as he also counts piano, bass and saxophone on his instrumental resume. Heavily influenced by blues greats such as Albert King, B.B. King and Albert Collins, Castro grew up in LA and cut his teeth in the blues clubs in the South Central area. He built a name for himself and has toured with Small Faces singer Ronnie Lane. After moving to San Francisco in 1995, he has been a local mainstay with his own Daniel Castro Band. Central Coasters may still be mourning Mighty Mike Schermer’s move to Texas, where he has teamed up with Marcia Ball’s band. Over the years Schermer has become a go-to sideman for legends such as Elvin Bishop, Bonnie Raitt and Maria Muldaur. If we’re judged by the company we keep, The Guitarsonists are in good standing.

Summary: 7:00 pm – Jack DeJohnette Trio
Description: Jack DeJohnette is indeed a renaissance man: drummer, bandleader, composer, and pianist. At age 74, the indefatigable jazzman is moving full speed ahead, adding more accomplishments to his prolific five-decade legacy. His current group – pianist George Colligan and bassist Jerome Harris – expertly navigates through post-bop and avant-garde territory with ease. In the psychedelic era of the mid-’60s, DeJohnette was a member of the Charles Lloyd Quartet, one of the few jazz groups to play at Bill Graham’s Fillmore rock emporium. In 1969, at the dawn of the fusion era, he drummed for Miles Davis on the groundbreaking Bitches Brew album. In the ’70s, DeJohnette led or co-led several acclaimed groups, including the Gateway Trio, Directions, and New Directions. He formed the eclectic, stylistic diverse Special Edition band in the early ’80s and joined the world-renowned Keith Jarrett Trio in 1983. In the ’90s, he collaborated with Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, Dave Holland, and many other fine artists. In 2009, DeJohnette’s Peace Time recording won a Grammy award for Best New Age Album. Jack was awarded a prestigious National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master Fellowship in 2012 for his life’s work.

Summary: 8:00 pm – Hapa
Description: Like the Hawaiian Islands themselves, HAPA’s Pan-Polynesian music is an amalgam of infuences ranging from ancient genealogical chants to the strummed ballads of Portuguese fisherman, Spanish cowboys, and the inspired melodies and harmonies of the traditional church choirs of the early missionaries. Add to this a dose of American acoustic folk/rock, and you have what has been described as the “most exciting and beautiful contemporary Hawaiian music the world knows!”… (Maui Times). These disparate ingredients blended together musically in the Pacific emotes the unique flavor of what Hawaii and HAPA music is: “beautiful, fragile, spiritual, powerful”… (L.A. Times).
Often encapsulated as the “Sound of Maui”, HAPA’s music evokes a place that many people at different times have referred to as heavenly. The overriding quality of their music is one of beauty and serenity, found in the majestic tones of the oli (chant), mele (song), the elegant movements of the sacred dance known as hula, and the exhilarating innovative sounds of virtuoso slack key guitar. HAPA’s self entitled debut cd released in 1993, swept the 1994 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards (Hawaii’s equivalent of the Grammy’s), becoming the biggest selling CD by a group or duo in the history of recorded Hawaiian music. The group’s ground breaking music has established them as the most recognized name in Hawaiian music internationally since their debut release, with sold-out shows from Tokyo to New York.

Summary: 7:00 pm – Julian Lage featuring Scott Colley and Kenny Wollesen
Description: Few musicians have ascended to the top of the contemporary jazz scene as guitarist Julian Lage—though jazz is the tip of the genre iceberg when it comes to Lage’s stylistic capabilities. With a background in modern jazz, Lage employs spritely runs in his playing with folksy inflection that is not out of place in an Americana music setting. His latest album, Archlight, is his first released since moving largely to electric guitar and playing in a trio format (he cut his teeth playing vintage Martin acoustics, often in a solo or duo setting). Supported on record and onstage by bassist Scott Colley and drummer Kenny Wollesen, Arclight was recorded by Grammy-winning producer/songwriter Jesse Harris and is rich with sing-able melodies and rootsy arrangements. This new album and trio mark the opening paragraph of a new chapter in this exceptional instrumentalist’s budding career.

Participants receive a 25 page booklet about the myth of Eros and Psyche as well as one CD of music.
Cost: $75
